APPEALS

Despite diligent and thorough representation at the trial court level, there are times when one of the parties is so dissatisfied with the trial court’s decision that they want to appeal it. After all, trial court judges are not error-proof, and a party should not have to suffer the consequences of a bad outcome on account of a judge’s misinterpretation or misapplication of the facts or law.

Our clients benefit from Grund & Leavitt’s excellent in-house appeals department in multiple ways. First, if our firm also handled the trial court matter, our appellate lawyers closely collaborate with the attorneys who tried the case. In most instances, our appellate lawyers will already be familiar with the case and its underlying legal issues due to our team-based approach. Second, at the trial-court phase of the case, our attorneys consult with the appellate lawyers to ensure that we are adequately protecting our clients in the event an appeal is taken by either side. Third, even if the trial was handled by another firm, our appellate team has such a wide cross-section of experience not only at the appellate level, but also at the trial-court level, that no matrimonial law issue is beyond our skill set.

Although our firm concentrates its practice in the area of matrimonial law, in addition to handling appeals of family law matters, members of our appeals department have had extensive experience successfully prosecuting and defending general civil appeals and criminal appeals, at all levels, in the state and federal courts.
